The troubled situation in Manipur worsened and tension mounted on Saturday as a particular community attacked a church in Imphal.

The attack on the biggest and oldest church MBC Centre Church allegedly by a Meitei mob followed the bombing and attacks on residential houses of Naga leaders in Imphal on Friday night by unknown attackers.

Several incidents of arson and mob attacks on vehicles owned by Nagas were also reported on Saturday.

According to sources, the attacks were carried out as a counter protest by some people belonging to the Meitei community against the ongoing economic blockade by the United Naga Council, demanding the release of their president Gaidon Kamei.

The Meitei group threatened to burn down the MBC Church and Tangkhul Babtist Church if they hold Sunday services and Christmas celebrations, the sources said.

The attackers were driven away after the police came and dispersed them with water cannon and tear gas.

Meanwhile, curfew has been declared in Chingmeirong area under which jurisdiction the churches are situated from 6 am to 6 pm on Sunday.

With the attack on the church, the political tension might take the shape of communal riots if the government and concerned authorities do not act fast to calm the situation and bring peace among the people in the state.
