He said the construction of the permanent campus has been divided into two phases and the construction of the first phase was expected to complete by the end of this year. IIM-Shillong is currently temporarily operating from Mayurbhanj complex since 2008.
The Institute has been able to produce over 800 graduates who also got placement in various companies. “Being an institute in the Northeast, we also have the responsibility for the region in terms of giving support in policy making, strategic planning and effective implementation of various developmental schemes,” Amitabha De told reporters.
When asked whether students from the north-eastern states are getting admission in such prestigious institute locating in the region, the IIM Director said that students from the Northeast may not want to study at RGIIM even if they qualify. “Students from the region might not want to come to RGIIM but they might prefer admission in other IIMs of the country as they would like to go out of the region and experience in metros,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, Dr De said the Union ministry of DoNER along with the North Eastern Council has set up Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis at IIM. He also stressed the need to concentrate more on research and to connect with other academic institutions within India and outside as well.
