An unidentified Bangladeshi national, who had allegedly crossed over to India near the town of Dalu in West Garo Hills (WGH) today died in the Tura Civil Hosptial where he was brought in an unconscious state.

According to sources, the unidentified man was caught by villagers yesterday near the village of Bamonpara close to the border with Bangladesh. Locals who saw him move between houses suspiciously caught the infiltrator and sought his identity. When the unidentified man could not produce any and also could not answer questions, an angry mob began to beat him before he was handed over to the Dalu police station.

The injured man was immediately rushed to the Dalu CHC for medical treatment and brought this afternoon to the Tura Civil Hospital where he is said to have succumbed to his injuries at about 3:30 pm.

The entire stretch of the border has seen sporadic incidents of dacoity that are committed by Bangladeshi criminals in collusion with Indian ones, despite the strict vigil being carried out by BEF men.

“He was seen moving suspiciously and villagers felt he was a thief from Bangladesh. They immediately caught and thrashed him. He was still alive when we went to the CHC this morning,” said a source from Dalu.

Confirming the incident, the SP of WGH, Dr MGR Kumar stated, “He was brought in an unconscious state to Tura Civil Hospital and succumbed at the hospital. We are inquiring into the matter and will await family members identifying him before legal formalities are completed.”

The SP also confirmed that the man was indeed a Bangladeshi citizen.
