Ziro has been in the list of the avid travelers that try to have the piece of some off-beat sojourns in the less explored valleys. The valley has got the beautiful paddy fields, astonishing landscapes, very friendly tribes. But there is a lot more to it!
Ziro Music Festival
Since 2012, the Ziro Music Festival has attracted more music lovers than the travelers from all over the globe to this little abode of God. It has been started to showcase the independent music scene in India, that just doesn’t show some Bollywood tunes. The bands and the artists from Northeast and the other parts of the globe have keenly performed here. The festival was founded in 2012 by Bobby Hano and the band Menwhopause’s guitarist Anup Kutty, and has seen the artists like Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Louw Majaw, Sha’air n Func, Indus Creed, Peter Cat Recording Co, Menwhopause, Guru Rewben Mashangva, and Barmer Boys among others. The festival is celebrated over four days and is hosted by the members of the very friendly tribe, Apatani people in Ziro.
Land of Rice Beer
Rice Beer has been considered as the Godly drink by the people of Arunachal Pradesh. Legend says that, once it used to be the kind of elixir that used to be the drink of Gods, and later the ‘secret ingredients’ were somehow stolen by the mere mortals.
Rice, being the impeccable part of the food culture of this state, has got its presence in the form of beer as well. Apong is the local name of the Rice Beer. Apong is of two kinds: Po:ro and Nogin and the harvesting of the Rice Beer is considered as the pride by the women of Ziro. Apong or Rice Beer is always the ritual drink during the wedding and its richness is considered to be the remark of a fertile union between the newly weds. Taste of the beer is unique and uncommon which binds the people of other parts to it!
Land of Picturesque Beauty
Ziro is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful valleys of Northeast. Reaching here itself is a fun to have! International Airport of Guwahati is the nearest airport to it and is the latest air connectivity to the valley. By train, one can have an overnight journey from Guwahati to Naharlagun and can have a taxi or bus to Ziro Valley. Usually, it takes around 4-5 hours to reach there from Naharlagun. It seems like a long journey but the view and the beautiful stretch makes it all worth. Situated at the altitude of 1500 metres on the Eastern Himalayas, the long stretch of paddy fields, the hills covered by the bamboo trees look so mesmerizing that it takes all the pain of the journey. People who love camping in the secluded places to gather tranquility would surely love the place. For me, the cool wind that penetrates into the bones, is divine. Hiking and camping are must-to-do here if you are a nature lover.

People of Ziro, the Apatani Tribe
Ziro town is home to the very friendly tribe, the Apatani Tribe. They are not only polite but also their hospitality makes a person spellbound. The Music Festival of Ziro is always organised with the help of the Apatani Tribe.
The uniqueness that seems most astonishing to me is that the Apatani women have the tattoos on their faces. What it denotes that the men of this tribe find their women very beautiful and to restrict them from the men from the other tribes, they ask them to get tattooed on their faces. Interesting!
So, the next time you plan a tour to Northeast, do get a few days in your hand to visit the Ziro Valley. Arunachal never disappoints and neither does this valley. Have a happy visit!
