A soldier has been arrested in the rape and murder case of an Airtel employee in Assam in August that received a lot of public attention in the state and raised the issue of women’s safety.

The decomposed body of Diksha Rajkumari, a mother of two, was found at her rented apartment in Sibsagar town of upper Assam. Her estranged husband, Rajib Borgohain, and another person were arrested in the case the same month.

Rajkumari met 30-year-old Pranjal Pratim Saikia, a serving jawan in the Border Security Force in Jammu and Kashmir, through social media.

According to Sibsagar superintendent of police Subodh Sonowal, the soldier had confessed to the crime and said she had been blackmailing him and demanding money from him. “It was then he decided to get rid of her,” said the cop.

The police were able to zero in on the accused after they found a mobile number, which was shown by records as present near the crime scene, was switched off since the day of the murder.

“Our investigations revealed that the phone belonged to the accused (Saikia). Following his arrest, Pranjal has confessed his involvement with the victim and his role in the murder,” Sonowal said.
