There have been considerable furore and protests against the state government’s decision to name colleges after RSS ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhayay. But the controversy got a new twist as Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists actually defaced the name board of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya located in Biswanath, Goalpara and Bongaingaon and renamed them after eminent personalities of Assam.
A group of KMSS and SMSS activists defaced the name board of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya at Amjonga (Goalpara) and renamed it as Bishnuprashad Rabha Adarsha Mahavidyalaya. Another team of KMSS and SMSS today defaced the name board of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya at Bihali (Biswanath). They said, ‘There were many eminent persons who had contributed immensely towards Assam’s development in various fields like education, culture, science, administration and so on.’ Alleging Upadhyaya as a mantra-guru of the RSS, the group renamed the college as Chabilal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya.
On the other hand, at Tulungia (Bongaigaon), a group of KMSS and SMSS members defaced the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya and renamed it after noted Assamese litterateur, historian and activist, Ambika Charan Choudhury. ‘This was just a symbolic protest, in the days to come we will intensify our protest against such establishments,’ said a protester.
