In the last few years, the central government has been focusing on developing transportation and infrastructural facilities in North East India. Along with enhancing rail link and augmentating of existing airports, the govt is also keen on boosting various industries in these states. One of the results of such endeavors is the unique Bamboo technology Park of Assam. Located in Kamrup’s Chaygaon- this is not like any recreational zone. Instead, it is aimed at boosting the production of eco-friendly handicrafts and stuffs made of bamboo.

The ambitious Bamboo Technology Park has been made with an investment over INR 62 crore at the Industrial Growth Centre of Chaygaon in Assam. The CM Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the park last year in a grand ceremony. It is a joint initiative of Government of India, Industries & Commerce department of Assam Government. This “Not- for-profit” company is now managed by Assam Industrial Development Corporation Ltd.

The Bamboo Technology Park has been made with an aim to provide a major boost to the age old handicrafts tradition in Assam. For centuries, the artisans have perfected the arts of making bamboo based furniture, utensils, containers and accessories. In fact, the entire NorthEash region produces above 60% of total bamboo yield of India. The species like Jati bamboo, Kaligoda and Bhaluka bamboo are used extensively for these needs.

Several small scale ventures already exist in Assam that excel at making excellent handicrafts products. This park will offer the artisans and skilled workforce required means to enhance productivity and utilize their innate skills.

The park has been set up with required machinery and top notch infrastructure. The area has well developed road, drainage system, and electricity along with water supply. The budding entrepreneurs can avail these facilities at the park and boost production. So, in a way this park will help generate more employment opportunities in the state.

• In –premise Dedicated 33 KKV power substation

• Captive power back up facility

• Security arrangements

• Well made roads inside the premises

• Bamboo stick manufacturing facility

• Bamboo Plastic Composite facility

• Bamboo Charcoal Plant

The management is also going to set up a R&D design center in near future.
