Manipur volleyball team skipper Sakil Chesam was assaulted by an irate fan leaving him with a broken jaw after the final against Mizoram during the 26th Mini National Volleyball Championship 2018 at Rdenthuwama Multi-purpose Stadium in Aizawl on Saturday evening.
Chesam, after some treatment at an Aizawl hospital, was rushed back here by flight on Sunday morning and admitted to Shija Hospital and Research Institute in Imphal West where he will undergo surgery on Monday.
The incident occurred when the Manipur team was celebrating their title win against Mizoram inside the stadium around 7.30pm. An unidentified man rushed at the team, punched Sakil hard and took off. Shakil, stunned by the blow, turned for help to his teammates and signalled for help from officials in the stands, including L. Baleshwor Singh, who was deputed by the Volleyball Federation of India as tournament official.
Sakil was rushed to an ITI Hospital in Aizawl but as facilities fell short he was shifted to City Hospital for first aid and later shifted to the boys’ hostel where they were lodged. As Sakil complained of numbness and dizziness, he was finally admitted to Greenwood Hospital, Aizawl.
Singh, who is also the general secretary of the All Manipur Volleyball Association, brought Sakil here at 1pm to be admitted to Shija Hospital and Research Institute. Doctors said Sakil has broken his jaw in two places and will be operated upon on Monday.
In the final, Manipur defeated Mizoram by 3-2 sets to claim the title.
Sakil was named Best Player of the championship.
The All Manipur Volleyball Association has condemned the incident.
