8 Personalities Who Represented Meghalaya Proudly

Meghalaya has time and again been described as the “Abode of Clouds” and many articles have been written on the beauty of the state. But very few articles are written about the people of this northeastern state. The indigenous tribes of Meghalaya are the Khasis, Jaintias and the Garos. The people of the state are generally perceived to be friendly and warm. They proudly showcase their culture and heritage to anyone willing to know about the place. While, on an individual level, almost everyone proudly represents Meghalaya, in this article, we will talk about some famous personalities who have made us incredibly proud.

Daniel Syiem

Daniel Syiem can solely be credited for bringing back an almost dying tradition of the Khasis – weaving. The fashion designer primarily works with a local fabric called Ryndia silk that is almost exclusively produced by women of the Ri-Bhoi district. Syiem is the first designer from this state to have showcased his work at the London Fashion Week and the Lakme Fashion Week.

Patricia Mukhim

A renowned journalist and social activist, Patricia Mukhim has become one of the credible voices of the society. Not one to fear about raising her voice, Mukhim has been awarded by different organizations and institutions for her incredible work. She is also the recipient of the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award.

JM Lyngdoh

James Micheal Lyngdoh was the Chief Election Commissioner of India from 2001 to 2004. He has always been known for being very vocal on the issue of corruption. In fact he faced numerous problems during his tenure of CEC because of this reason. Lyngdoh was born in Shillong and studied in St. Edmund’s School.

Lou Majaw

A performing artist from Shillong, Lou Majaw is famous for organizing tribute shows for Bob Dylan. He has been celebrating Dylan’s birthday every year since 1972. The 69-year-old musician continues to publicly sing and entertain young and old alike.

Tipriti Kharbangar

Tipriti Kharbangar, an integral member of the blues band Soulmate, is regarded as one of the finest blues singer to have emerged from this part of the country. Along with band member, Rudy Wallang, Tipriti has performed all over India and several other countries.

Rudy Wallang

The other integral member of Soulmate, Rudy Wallang plays, sings and also writes the songs. Along with Tipriti, he is regarded as one of the best Blues singer in the country. Before forming Soulmate in 2003 with Tipriti, he was famously associated with Lou Majaw’s band The Great Society.

Ronnie Lahiri

Ronnie Lahiri is one of the note-worthy producers in the Hindi film industry. Ronnie is one of the many unknown Shillongites who are slowly but surely making their mark in the competitive industry. He spent his childhood and young adulthood in Shillong after which he went to Mumbai with dreams of entering the film industry. Today he has produced six films – four in Hindi and two in Bengali – with the latest being the highly acclaimed film of 2016 – PINK.

Manas Chaudhuri

Manas Chaudhuri is a former MLA who was also the editor of the most widely circulated English daily of Meghalaya, The Shillong Times. He was elected MLA twice and had served as a Cabinet minister of the state. Manas Chaudhuri is known for social work and journalistic skills. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2005.
