‘It is true that I am contemplating to contest next year’s district council elections,” Ampareen said while talking to a group of media persons here today.
She, however, said that if the law permits she will definitely contest the elections. “We have seen that KHADC CEM PN Syiem never resigned from the post of the MLA. Therefore, the issue of office of profit does not arise,” the Congress legislator from East Shillong said.
It may be mentioned that seven MLAs resigned from the post of MDCs following the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015, which sought to end holding of dual posts by the MLAs.
Despite seven of the MLAs resigned from the posts of the MDCs, Syiem did not resigned and continues to occupty the post of both the MDC and also as an MLA. However, Syiem finally won the battle after the then Governor of the
State, V. Shanmuganathan had passed an order stating that Syiem does not attract disqualification based on the opinion of Election Commission of India.
Neil Antonio War is the currently the MDC of Laitumkhrah constituency and War, who was a congress MDC earlier, deserted the party and joined BJP before the 2018 Assembly polls. He, however, unsuccessfully contested the 2018 Assembly elections as a BJP candidate and recently resigned from the BJP to join the UDP.
