Meghalaya govt. to constitute High-Level committee to resolve relocation of Sweeper Colony’s issue

The Meghalaya Government on Monday decided to constitute a “High-Level Committee” to find a permanent solution to the long pending issue of the relocation of sweeper’s colony from Them Iew Mawlong.

“We are expected to notify the committee at the earliest,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told media persons after the various meetings with the political parties, Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri U Hynniewtrep and the Hawkers Association here on today.

The Chief Minister said that the Government is committed to finding a permanent solution to the long pending issue of relocation of the sweeper colony.

According to Sangma, the high-level committee will be headed by the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.

The other members of the committee will be Urban Affairs Minister, Hamlet Dohling, Health and Family Welfare Minister, AL Hek, Agriculture Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh, Home Minister James PK Sangma and CEM of KHADC, PN Syiem while Principal Secretary DP Wahlang will be the member secretary.

He further informed that they have already asked  the Urban Affairs department to immediately submit a report in detail to this committee regarding the current position of the sweeper’s colony including the legal aspects, past history, all issues concerning authorized and unauthorized occupants of the colony to be able to get actual status of this particular problem right now.

When asked if any timeline has been given to the committee to complete the exercise, he said that this has been an issue which is pending for a very long time and there is complication surrounding this issue.

“We would be asking the committee to complete the job as soon as possible and submit the report at the earliest,” Chief Minister said, adding, “The committee has been given the power to co-opt members if there is a need,”.

Meanwhile, Sangma observed that a large number of society has been financially and economically affected including farmers, taxi drivers, hawkers,  shopkeepers, daily labourers and people from all walks of like have been badly affected due to the agitations in the past four-five days.

“I would like to appeal to all the people who are agitating not to agitate following this commitment given by the Government to ensure that a solution is found on this issue,” Chief Minister said.

He further said that the solution is not on the street but on the table.

When asked about the present situation, Home Minister James PK Sangma said that flag march has been conducted by the army and as of now, the situation is tense but under control.

When asked if there is a political agenda behind the current situation, he said that it is not appropriate to comment anything on this.

“Right now it is very important to work with us. I was very happy with the all-party meeting since all parties’ have expressed high concern about the current situation. Everybody was focus to ensure peace return back to the city,” Sangma said.

He further said that a number of the organisations have questioned if the person who is responsible for the assault of three young boys has been arrested.

“The individual has been arrested within 24 hours. In fact, the person is in custody. Charge sheet is being prepared against the accused who is identified as B Misa,” Chief Minister added.
