The resignation of former Congress leader, MM Danggo from the post of MLA has opened doors for all political parties to once again prove their strength.

With the NPP is all set to field Danggo, who quit the Congress to join NPP, as their candidate in Ranikor constituency, the coalition partners of the NPP led coalition government in Meghalaya, however, feel otherwise.

Recently, NPP’s prominent partner, UDP has made it clear that they will field a candidate to fight against NPP’s Danggo in the by poll even as they maintained that this decision will not have any ratification in the coalition government.

Interestingly, the Congress, which is determined to beat the NPP in Ranikor, has showed signs of joining hands with UDP in defeating Danggo.

Meanwhile, another coalition partner of MDA government, the PDF is pushing for the idea of putting up a common candidate for the Ranikor bypoll to fight against Danggo.

Speaking to media persons, KHADC CEM and PDF leader, PN Syiem today said that they have pitched the idea to the political parties during their first meeting and added that the matter will only become clear after a series of meetings which will be held at the later dates.

Highlighting that many candidates, who had earlier contested the Legislative Assembly polls from the constituency, will try to do the same this time round, Syiem said that it will be better for Pelcy Snaitang and Don Massar, who had earlier contested from BJP and NPP, to join the platform along with their supporters and extend their support to the common candidate if they wish to defeat Danggo.

Sources suggest that Syiem will likely be projected as the common candidate of all political parties, if the proposed idea is welcomed by all.

When asked whether the Congress has sent any feelers in this regard, the KHADC chief said “What matters now rests not in the high command but at the grassroot level and if the grassroot party workers of various parties including the Congress decide to support a common candidate, then there are chances for the tides to go against the NPP.”

When asked whether this decision will have any impact on the coalition government, Syiem said that in every election, every party has the right to devise strategies to ensure their party’s victory.

“Just because we are part of the government, it does not mean that we use the same method in every election. Last time, our target was to bring down the Congress, this time it is different,” he added.

“We cannot lose our identity because of a coalition. We cannot compromise on our identity as a party because of the partnership”, Syiem asserted.

Stating that if the idea of fielding a common candidate materialists, Syiem said that it will be a tough fight for NPP and there is every chance for Danggo, who has been representing the constituency for several years, to lose the battle this time.
