With the Congress losing one state after another, Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said there was a possibility that the number of the party-ruled states could get reduced to just two. Mizoram is ruled by the Congress and Thanhawla has been in the hot seat for the past two terms.

After a slew of defeats at the hands of the BJP with the latest being in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress is now in power only in four states — Meghalaya, Punjab, Karnataka and Mizoram.

“The number of Congress-ruled states may be reduced to about two, but excepting Mizoram,” Thanhawla told The New Indian Express on Monday. However, he did not spell out any reasons for the party’s abysmal performance over the past few years, including in the Northeast.

Although he was optimistic about Mizoram, Thanhawla did not mention the other state where he felt the Congress would be able to retain power. Asked about it, he said, “I cannot take the risk now”.

Assembly elections in Mizoram are expected in the latter part of next year, while Meghalaya will go to hustings in three months’ time. Both are Christian-majority states where the BJP is only trying to grow.

The Congress sits pretty in Mizoram in the absence of a formidable opposition. The Mizo National Front had ruled the state twice from 1998 to 2008 but is now faced with a depleting popularity.
