Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga on Friday expressed confidence that his party will come back to power in the Assembly elections slated for later this year.

He was addressing a function at Zemabawk during which he inducted 84 voters to the party.

The former Mizoram chief minister said his party would reform the state, which he alleged has been damaged by the Congress during its 10-year term.

He urged voters to take money from the Congress during election campaign but cast their votes in favour of the MNF.

“The Congress is sure to dole out money to woo voters. You are free to receive such money as it is your share, but you do not owe any vote to the party. If you give your vote to the Congress, this means that you are allowing Mizoram to become economically and politically worse,” he said.

He said people have started reposing faith in the MNF, which is an indication of the party regaining power in the next Assembly elections.

“Many voters have started joining the MNF and this proves that the Congress will be removed to make way for a new MNF-led government in Mizoram,” he said.

The former rebel leader also said his government would lift the existing Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition and Control) Act (liquor laws) and impose total prohibition in the state.

He said financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh each would be given to farmers to help them begin their start-ups.

Zoramthanga also expressed the hope that the state’s economy would look up after five years of MNF rule.

He said his government would give all possible help to the farmers by providing them with financial assistance during jhum slash-and-burn, cultivation and harvest and even arrange to sell their produce.

Employment opportunities would be created for both the educated and less qualified people to achieve sustainable development, he added.
