In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old youth was arrested for ‘attempted rape’ of a 5-year-old minor girl at Mongsenbai Ward Mokokchung town at around 8:00 am on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as one Lematoshi hailing from Longsa village under Mokokchung district. The accused was staying with his uncle, married to the mother of the victim. The victim was visiting her mother when the incident allegedly happened. As per the Mokokchung police, a case has been registered as C/No 0017/18 under Section 4 of POCSO Act and the accused has been forwarded to judicial custody. Police sources also confirmed that there was ‘abrasion’ (trauma) in the posterior parts of the victim. Police said that they are treating the incident as a rape case.

“We are treating it as a rape case. Whether there was penetration or not, even touching a minor in an inappropriate manner is termed as rape under the stringent POCSO Act,” said a police officer who wished not to be named because s/he was not authorized to talk with the media. As of now, the case is still under investigation, said the police officer and hoped that the charge sheet would be completed soon.

Meanwhile, Mokokchung police, on its official Facebook page, requested all citizens to maintain peace and “to allow law to take its course” and at the same time requested the people “not to spread any fake information about the incident.”
