Ending all speculations, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that he is not heading back to the Lok Sabha and will continue serving the state as the chief minister.

Speaking to media persons here recently, the chief minister expressed his clarity on the issue and stated that it is very clear even as he added that even the coalition partners have made their stand clear on the matter that he should lead the Government

“It is a decision of the coalition partners including the NPP legislators that I should continue to lead the Government,” Sangma said.

NPP’s partner UDP which supported NPP to form the government was firm that Sangma should lead the government.

At present, Conrad is the Lok Sabha MP from Tura and not a state legislator. For him to continue as the chief minister, he would have to contest the Bye election from any constituency in the state. Sangma, who is leading a five-party alliance, was sworn in as chief minister in March. He has time till September to resign as Member of Parliament and contest and win an Assembly seat.

Sangma, however, refused to divulge as from which constituency, he will be contesting the bye election.

“ You will come to know about it in a matter of few days and let me also keep something close to my chest,” the Chief Minister said.

However, sources said that Conrad Sangma would contest the Bye election from South Tura constituency and Agatha Sangma will pave way for her brother to contest the by-poll.

The coalition partner of the NPP, UDP earlier was keen to have Conrad Sangma as the Chief Minister of the state while former president of HSPDP, Ardent Basaiawmoit had expressed his disagreement over choosing Conrad as the chief minister and was of the opinion that a local leader should lead the government.
