Meghalaya: A crack in PDF? Party Chairman, MLAs issue contradicting statements

Jul 06, 2018 18:09

The ongoing political conflict between the National People’s Party (NPP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has left the PDF ministers of the coalition government in a tight spot and contradicting statements issued by the party MLAs and Chairman, PN Syiem reflects the “hostile” atmosphere within the party.

A day after PDF Chairman and KHADC CEM, PN Syiem dared the state government to pull out from the Executive Committee in the District Council, party MLA and cabinet minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh contradicted Syiem’s statement and asserted that there is no plan on the part of the party to withdraw its support from the National People’s Party (NPP) led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government.

“During the meeting yesterday, all the three MLAs of the party are of the view that it is not the right time to pull out from the Government. We have expressed the same views to the PDF chairman Pynshngain N Syiem,” Lyngdoh, who is also the Minister in the Government told reporters today.

He also said that the MLAs of the party will again meet today since Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling was not there yesterday since he was in Jowai.

Lyngdoh said that they would like to sort out this issue at the earliest. “I want to make it very clear that the party has not intention to withdraw its support from the MDA Government at the moment,” Lyngdoh asserted.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma maintained that all the MLAs of the PDF are still part and parcel of the Government adding that there is no question that the PDF is pulling out from the Government.

“I had personally talked with all the PDF MLAs. They have gave their commitment to remain with the present coalition,” he said. The Chief Minister, however, maintained that there is an issue within the District Council which needs to be sorted out at that level. “It will not be correct on my part to comment anything on the development in the District Council. The same thing in the JHADC where the UDP had formed the Executive Committee with the support of the Congress,” Sangma said.

While asserting that the ADC is a different entity, Chief Minister said that the district council issues should be handled at the district council level while the issues at the State should be handled by the State Government.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong had stated yesterday that there is no threat to the MDA Government even if the PDF decides to pull out from the Government.
