A huge fire that broke out on Sunday at 2:33 AM in Bagree Market in Burrabazar area of Kolkata is now completely under control after 3 days, a senior officer of the fire department said on Wednesday.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. However, state government has directed the police and fire department to investigate the cause of the fire after which strict legal action would be taken against those involved.
The fire gutted thousands of business establishments in the building, causing a huge amount of loss to the traders.
Traders, cops and firemen also arranged helmets for the civilians as they entered the building to forage through the fire-ravaged shops and godowns. “We cannot stop them from entering the building under such circumstances but we need to ensure their safety,” said a policeman who was writing down the names and phone numbers of those who were handed over the helmets.
The West Bengal Fire Services Ministry on Tuesday lodged a complaint against the owners of the market for lacking proper firefighting arrangements and for leasing out bathrooms and staircase areas for storage facility.
