Smartphones and tablets have made their way into almost every household today. So, why not put them to some good use for enriching a toddler’s learning experience? With carefully chosen apps and few minutes of screen time, your toddler would not only have lots of fun but also learn a great deal in the process. Here are some of the best free apps to get you started.

ABC Phonics - The app features an alphabet phonic song for each of the letters that are both fun and catchy even for the toddlers. It also has tracing cards for both uppercase and lowercase letters plus interactive games for each letters. Kids can easily figure out most of the things on their own with just a little help here and there. There are also some funny photo frames to mess around with. All in all it’s a great free app with first four letters of the alphabet and worth a space on your phone.

PicsArt for Kids

A very cute app for kids to practice some fine motor skills and pre-emergent writing skills. The app features three different modes - draw, colour and learn. It has a clean interface, a good range of colours and nice images for the kids to come up with their own creatives. The added advantage of this app is that it’s free of ads so you need not worry about those wandering hands.

Nursery Rhymes (All Volumes)

The app store is flooded with various nursery rhymes apps but this one is perhaps the best. It is free and you don’t need an internet connection to play the animations. There are four volumes in this series featuring most of the popular nursery rhymes like the twinkle twinkle little star, If you are happy, baa baa black sheep plus a lot more. The animations might be basic but are great for the little ones with some nice catchy tunes.

Dr. Panda’s Hospital

Kids will love pretending to be a doctor in this adorable creative role play app. The app includes everything that a real hospital has like the patient rooms, waiting rooms, medical bag and medical tools. From cleaning the hospital to curing the animals, the player has to take responsibility for everything. Small details like the ability to change the bed into fun themes beds, opening windows or turning on the music and the cause affecting the mood of the patients adds a social element to it. There are some other themes also in this series that are equally appealing.

LEGO® DUPLO® TrainIf your kid is fascinated by trains and engines then this simple game would be excellent for some creative play and learning. It’s another role play app that lets your child drive around a colourful train from station to station. There are lots of activities like building bridges, loading wagons, refuelling and laying tracks that would keep your little one busy for a good amount of time. The most amazing part of this app is no in app purchase, no ads and no external links.
