Imphal - Students of Ithai Khunou Government High School tried to storm the office of the Education Minister M Okendro’s office in Imphal West on Friday. They had gathered in large numbers to demand for teachers for their school. The students shouted slogans and threw rice bags, school uniforms and books, distributed to them as part of the mid-day meal scheme, to the police posted for security inside the New Secretariat complex.

A large number of students came to Imphal from Ithai in three buses and got down at the Nupi Lal complex and staged a protest march till the Secretariat complex. They marched into the complex, but were pushed back by security personnel posted there. A team of Imphal West police had also rushed to the spot to stop the agitation. They threw rice bags, uniforms and books they had brought along. After they were stopped from thronging into the minister’s office, they staged their protest at the Nupi Lal complex. The minister was not in office when the students came to protest.

“The students are demanding their right to education. The students have come to meet the Education minister to hand over the rice, books and uniform which have been distributed to them as part of the mid-day meal as their right to education is not fully exercised by the government,” said a person who accompanied the students from Ithai.

According to reports, the Ithai Khunou Government High School has around 600 students. The science, Hindi, English, Manipuri teachers were transferred from the school. Since, the school was already short of teachers, the school’s student union had demanded the Education (S) director to fill up the posts of the vacant teachers. The Director allotted 6 teachers for the school, but till date none of them have joined the school. The students had earlier submitted several memorandums to the minister regarding the matter.

Later in the afternoon, the minister went to meet the students who were waiting for public transport at Keishamthong. He assured the students that the vacant posts will be filled up soon. If the teachers who have been given the posting at Ithai Khunou Government High School fail to report by Wednesday, inquiry will be done and action will be taken up against them. He further added if they fail to join, by Saturday, the students will get the teachers for the vacant posts.
