IIT Guwahati established in the year 1994, being one of the youngest institutes has successfullly placed itself in the eighth rank at the overall category.
Gauhati University established in the year 1948 which is one of the oldest and the most renowned institutes. It is a teaching-cum-affiliating university. At present there are approximately 326 Colleges/Institutes which comes under this university, which are mostly located in the districts of lower Assam, has been ranked 43rd in the Annual National Ranking.

Tezpur University is a central university, ranks in the 48th in the National category. Tezpur University was established, by an Act of Parliament, in 1994. The then prime minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao, chaired the opening of the university.
North Eastern Hill University
North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, ranks 77th in the National level ranking.
Mizoram University is a central university under the University Grants Commission, Government of India, and was established on July 2, 2001, by the Mizoram University Act (2000) of the Parliament of India, ranks 94th.

Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management
Rajiv Gandhi IIM Shillong ranks 99th, the college was started in the year 2008 with a goal to expand management education in North Eastern part of India. The decision to set up this institute was unanimously taken by Chief Minister of north east along with Union minister of Human Resource Development. IIMS is the youngest and seventh among the IIMs of the country. The institute was named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, IIMS aims at creating unbeatable leaders in the field of management.
