Nagaland has less than 500 doctors to take care of a population of 2 million people. The state needs more surgeons, pediatricians, and obstetricians along with other medical professionals. Assam is facing an acute shortage of doctors too. Manipur has only about half the number of minimum doctors it needs. Arunachal Pradesh is in dire need of medical specialists, and its Governor had to talk about it with the Union Health Minister J P Nadda.
In an effort to ameliorate the situation, the state governments of the northeast region have built up impressive medical colleges that produce quality doctors and contribute to the medical research and development. One needs to go through stringent medical entrance exams and pay heavy fees to get access to the best medical colleges in the region.

Alternative Routes to become a doctor in the Northeast
NEIGRIHMS medical college has one of the most beautiful college campuses in India.
- North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong in Meghalaya conducts its own NEIGRIHMS MBBS entrance exam for aspirants who are domiciles or permanent residents of the eight the north-eastern states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura, and Nagaland) of India. The exam offers access to 42 medical seats in NEIGRIHMS that come in the northeast quota.
- Gauhati University conducts the Assam Common Entrance Examination for Ayurveda and Homeopathy (Assam CEEAH) for admission to:
o BAMS programme in the Government Ayurvedic College, Guwahati which has 50 seats, and
o BHMS programme in the Swahid Jadav Nath Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Guwahati, Assam; Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Nagaon; and Dr. JK Saikia Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Jorhat - which have 50 seats each. It means that there are a total of 150 BHMS seats available.
Students do not need to prepare for these exams separately. Their NEET preparation program should be enough to crack these exams too – provided they do practice questions from their previous years’ question papers a few days before the respective medical exams.
You may access the free askIITians medical preparation app for some high-quality lectures on topics related to medical entrance exams, and get access to carefully selected practice questions.
Which medical college should you opt for: NEIGRIHMS or GMC?
Lucky students, who get a chance to opt between the Northeast’s two best medical colleges, often get confused about whether they should go for the Guwahati Medical College or the NEIGRIHMS.
Experts recommend students from other states to go for the GMC as it has an airport and hence, the accessibility of GMC is better. The medical college also has more students, more faculty, and better exposure. Students who would like to go for postgraduate medical programs would like it better because there are many coaching centers nearby which cater to students who are preparing for PG medical entrance exams.
On the other hand, NEIGRIHMS is run by the central government and has better healthcare facilities. It is known for the high-quality medical education it offers and owns a tertiary government hospital. It is one of the rare medical colleges in India to possess a ‘virtual’ dissection table (which is perhaps not available even in AIIMS Delhi).
Moreover, NEIGRIHMS has one of the most beautiful clean and green campuses in India. There are only 50 MBBS seats here, which mean that the teacher-to-student ratio is higher, and students receive more attention in class from the teachers.
