The North eastern states of India have lagged in certain amenities and resources compared to other parts of India post-independence. While Transport and communication facilities have a long way to go, education system in these states has improved significantly in recent times. In last few decades, a number of universities have been established in the region. These universities have given the students more options to pursue higher education without leaving their homeland.
Below listed are the top universities of the North Eastern India.
Located in Tezpur, a major city in Assam, this is a central university. It was set up after forming an act of parliament in the year 1994. Before the university campus was set up at Napaam region, it operated from premises of Tezpur Law College and Darrang College. The institute is in proximity to greenery and a number of tourist spots in Tezpur. There are hostels for male and female students in the campus as well as options for visitors to stay. Tezpur University offers a number of Post graduate courses in streams of science, management and humanities. It is the one of the few universities in the country to have a Department of Energy. It has four schools of studies segregated into 21 departments.
This university has deep roots with history of struggle of people of Assam. It is associated with Bengali language movement and a Saheed Minar set up at the entrance bears testimony to the past. This central university has sixteen schools and 35 departments. There are 56 colleges which are under jurisdiction of the university. The main campus is located at Dargakona, not far from Silchar. Another campus is present at Diphu. The 16 schools have been named after noted scholars, freedom fighters and social reformists like Abanindranath Tagore, Hargobind Khurana, and Jawaharlal Nehru etc. Assam University has academic collaboration with universities abroad including Nihon University, Japan, Nantes University, France and University of Montreal, Canada.

The first public university in North east region of India, Gauhati University was set up in 1948 after passing of Gauhati University Act 1947. It has 326 affiliated colleges under it. Located in Jalukbari in Guwahati city, the campus is on side of Brahmaputra River. Now the campus is like a mini township and it is refereed as 'Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar'. Inside the campus, there are plenty of amenities for students and teachers including water supply, health service, market, auditorium etc. The academic units comprise of the Faculty of Arts, sciences, Commerce, technology, law and management. Later a faculty of fine arts has also been set up. The university also offers distance learning courses now.

Assam Don Bosco University
This is a private state university located in Guwahati, Assam. Set up in March 2008 by Assam Don Bosco University Act, 2009, it is the state’s first private university. It offers a number of courses in disciplines like Social Sciences, Management, and Engineering. It also has courses for pursuing research and distance learning courses. The university has got nod from the UGC to conduct Distance Education courses in MBA and MCA. It enjoys accreditation of NAAC and AICTE. Besides, it is a member of AIU. Assam Don Bosco University has academic collaborations and MoUs with University of Fribourg - Switzerland, University of Chester - United Kingdom and DeSales University - United States. The university has 3 campuses namely Tapesia Gardens, Azara and a Kharguli. This university enjoys access to 1 Gbps High speed web bandwidth along with access to National Knowledge Network.

Assam Kaziranga University
Kaziranga University is one of the new private universities set up in Assam. It was established in 2012 as per the Assam Kaziranga University Act, 2012. The university, recognized by AICTE and UGC, is located in Koraikhowa region near Jorhat city. The university offers advanced courses in subjects like Management, engineering, computing sciences etc. It has a MoU with University of Plymouth, UK and Cardiff Metropolitan University for student and faculty exchange plans and JV research. The students of Kaziranga University also get exposure of global education through a tie up with Nanyang Technological University. Recently, the university has also tied up with IIT Bombay.
This is a central university set up in 1989. With 61 colleges under it, Nagaland University has campuses spread in various parts in the state including Lumani, Kohima and Dimapur. It offers courses like MBA, M.com, MA, M.Sc and a lot more. The university also offers some undergraduate courses. It resorts to MAT operated by AIMA for admission to MBA courses. Students can avail transportation and library facilities at the university campuses.

Mahatma Gandhi University
Set up after implementation of Meghalaya State legislative Act, 2010- Mahatma Gandhi University is among the newer universities in the North east India. Recognized by UGC and AIU, this university conducts a variety of courses under disciplines like Information Technology, Engineering, Management, science, arts, commerce etc. The campus is located at Meghalaya’s Matchakolgre. There are 2 coordinating offices in Delhi. There are a number of online courses offered by this university and lateral entry schemes. It also offers diploma in specialized disciplines like VFX and Animation, Biotechnology and medical lab technology apart from traditional courses.
This is a major central university in the North east India which has got ‘B’ Grade from NAAC. Set up in 1987, after deployment of Tripura University Act it gave a major impetus to higher education quest of people in the state. Tripura University now offers post-graduate programs in 16 subjects. There are 38 degree courses as well. The university campus is located at Suryamaninagar- 10 km from Agartala. The major institutes and colleges affiliated to this university are Bir Bikram Memorial College, Techno India Agartala, Government Women's College and Government College of Arts and Crafts. Some of the major courses offered by the university are Post Graduate Diploma in Rubber Technology, Vocational Under-Graduate Programs like Video Production and Integrated Master Degree Programs. There are a few centers in the university like Computer Centre, Centre for Gandhian Studies, Bioinformatics Centre and IGNOU Study Centre.
