10 Rockbands of Northeast

As we all know, northeast is famous for basically 4 things- Food, Fashion, Biodiversity and Music. Apart from soothing our eyes with its pristine beauty, North East region in India is also the home to some of the finest rock bands in India.

A list bringing out 10 rock bands of northeast are featured below:

Soulmate:

Soulmate is the first and only blues rock band of India in the World Music Scenario. Formed by the lead guitarist and song writer, Rudy Wallang and Vocalist Tipriti Kharbangar, this rockband from Shillong which formed in February 2003. Soulmate gained nationwide recognition and popularity within jazz and blues circles in India after they became the only blues band to represent the country at the 23rd International Blues Challenge organized by The Blues Foundation of America, in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, in February 2007 and 2010.

Girish and the Chronicles:

This Sikkim band was founded by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Girish Pradhan in 2009. This is one of the popular bands of Northeast which is currently based in Bangalore. They are influenced by legends like Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Guns and Roses. In 2010, their ‘Yesteryears’ won silver award at Suncane Scale Festival in Montenegro, Europe

Boomerang:

Boomerang is a rock band from Mizoram formed in 2005 with its four blends of ‘junk’ - Atea on vocals, Boom Hangsing on guitars/ keyboard, Joshua on Bass and RS on Drums. Their song ‘war’ was featured on the Stupid Ditties 3 compilation.

Alobo Naga & The band:

This rock band from Nagaland has won the MTV Best Indian Act in Europe Music Awards in 2012. It was formed by singer and songwriter Alobo Naga.  The band was noticed with a video single named, Painted Dreams which was also chosen as the official theme song of International Short Film Festival (2001), Guwahati.

Farrago:

Farrago is a metal band from Jorhat, Assam founded in 2010, with a line up of guitarists Alex and Paul, Vocalist- Earl, Bassist -Jordian and Drummer Asif. Farrago's single 'Nymphomaniac' got debuted in TJ Music Cafe USA in 2011. Their songs are based on social criticism and authentic portrayal of the prevailing condition of humankind.

Still Waters:

Still Waters is a band from Gangtok that was formed in 2001 comprising of Abhishek Lemo Gurung (Singer), Sonam Lachungpa (Lead guitar), Lokes Mangar (Bass), Samir Gurung (Rhythm Guitar), Ronald Pradhan (Drums).They mainly focuses on creating original music “Feel good, Riff Rock Band” as it is popularly called as.

The Vinyl Records:

Formed in 2010 by a group of girls from Arunachal Pradesh, the band mostly plays post-punk, new wave and indie rock tunes. Best known for their anti-drug compilation called 7X7 with their track, Coco Bomb. This rock band has acclaimed recognition by performing in several music festivals like Ziro music festival, The Loudest, etc.

Lucid Recess:

Formed in April 2004, this is one of the best bands of India. Formed by Siddharth and Amitabh Barooa the band made a striking mark in Northeast as well as in India. Their music can be defined as a blend of alternative metal and rock and they believe in creating music for both the mind and the heart. 

Midnight Garden Factor:

The Midnight Garden Factor is a progressive metal band from Shillong formed in 2007. The band holds Freddie Nelson Thangkhiew in vocals, Rupert Nongkhlaw in Bass vocals, Bari Kharnaior- Guitars, Noel in Drums and Ashique Elahi – Keyboards. The band made its first debut in The Hornbill Rock Concert in December 2007 and bagged the 2nd runner’s up. They were crowned the first Meghalaya Icon in 2010 March and later became the ambassador for “Meghalaya’s Aids Control Society’.

Testo Sisters:

This four sisters’ band consisting of Mercy, Azi, Kuvelu and Alune is one of the popular musical band of Northeast. They sing in Chokri language complimented by a classic Naga instrument known as Tati/Heka Libuh to keep their traditional folk flavours alive through their music.
