7 Northeast stars who have made it big in Reality TV

After storming into the finals of the fourth season of India’s Got Talent in 2012, Toshanbor Singh Nongbet mesmerized one and all with his Opera style of singing. Now, the singing star from Shillong is  making waves on Asia’s Got Talent 2015. But many would not realize that before Toshanbor, Northeast has had it’s fair share of talents who shined on national television.

Debojit Saha

Northeast got its first taste of national fame on reality TV through Debojit Saha, who won Zee TV’s reality series, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge in 2005.

Born in a Bengali family from Silchar, Assam, Saha’s career has excelled beyond his expectations after the win. He was one of the 14 contestants in the season 2 of TV reality show Bigg Boss and has also participated in other reality shows on STAR Plus.

He has lent his voice to Bollywood and Assamese movies.

Amit Paul

Amit Paul gave Northeast its second taste of fame by being the runner up in the Indian Idol season 3 in 2007. He was beaten by Prashant Tamang from Kolkata.

Born in a Bengali family from Shillong, Amit Paul’s career started after the show.

He has now become a budding playback singer in the Hindi Film Industry and has sung playbacks for Bengali movies as well as in Nepali movies.

Saurabhee Debbarma

Amit Paul’s loss was covered up by Saurabhee Debbarma, who went on to win the fourth season of Indian Idol. By winning the competition she also became the first female to win the Indian Idol title.

From being a petite, bubbly girl, Saurabhee has now gone on to sing for a number of music albums in tinseltown and has also worked with the 3 Idiots music director Shantanu Moitra for the music video ‘Our Northeast Our Star’.

She is also the record holder of Guinness World Records on Colors for singing non-stop suspended upside down for 4:30 mins.

Longkiri Timung


Longkiri Timung got his shot of fame during the sixth season of MTV Roadies in 2009. He came second after losing to Nauman Sait.

Popularly known as Kiri, the lad from Diphu in Assam, was the only entrant from the entire Northeast into the popular television reality show ‘MTV Roadies’ and who subsequently made it to the finals.

Kiri is now back home in Diphu. After his father’s demise, Kiri is now attending to his mother, whose health is deteriorating with each passing day.

Teji Toko


The drummer boy from Arunachal Pradesh got his “15 minutes of Fame” in the second season of India’s Got Talent in 2010 when he competed against Shillong Chamber Choir, who went on to win the competition.

Toko was awarded the first runners up, as the group from Shillong etched over him to win the coveted title.

At the time of the competition, Toko was only in Class XII, and wanted to complete his schooling first and train as a musician later on in life.

Shillong Chamber Choir


Based in Shillong, the Shillong Chamber Choir shot to fame after it won the India’s Got Talent (Season 2) in October 2010, on Colors TV, where it performed western chorals, as well as choral-style revamps of Hindi film (Bollywood) classics.

The choir also participated in the 6th World Choir Games held at Shaoxing China (Shanghai) in July 2010 and was awarded Gold in all three categories: Musica Sacra, Gospel and Popular.

Since then the choir group has gone on to perform abroad and also at former President Pratibha Patil’s presidential banquet at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, for U.S. President, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, during their November 2010 state visit to India.

John Oinam


Hailing from Manipur was not a very known figure to the music and entertainment industry in Manipur, at least not until he secured a spot in the reality entertainment TV Show, The Stage season 2, India’s only English singing talent hunt, in the Colors Infinity channel, from September 17. Picking up gradual momentum with two of his bands, Avahan and Blend Twins, John gathered the limelight after auditioning for The stage season 2 ans since then, he has been the talk of the town.

John Oinam hails from a very small place called Thanga which is located near Loktak lake. He was born at a place called Oinam.
