Talk of freedom fighters and the Northeast did not lag behind giving India such renowned personalities like Bir Tikendrajit Singh of Manipur who was a patriot and a prince of the kingdom, also known as the Lion of Manipur. He fought the British and precipitated the Anglo Manipur War of 1891 decades before Gandhi.
Bhogeshwari Phukanani of Assam set an example for ladies by joining the quit India movement. She hit Captain Finish on the head and he retaliated by shooting her, creating a heroine for India.

If the other part of India had its Rani Laxmibai, the northeast has its own Rani Gaidinliu, a Naga leader who joined the Heraku religious organization and spiritedly resisted the British, a legend that stands tall in the Hills of the Northeast. Kanaklata Barua of Assam is another charismatic woman freedom fighter who joined the Mrityu Bahini death squad of Assam. She was shot during a march to the local police station, at a tender age of 17. Talking of ladies, Irom Sharmila is another northeast woman known as Iron Lady of Manipur, a civil rights activist and poet. Unfortunately she lost in the elections. The people of the Northeast do not take easily to invaders and Lachit Borphukan is one such person who resisted the Mughals 16 times.

Northeast has also given the country some sports personalities. Dr Tali Ao captained the Indian football team in the 1948 summer Olympics and was probably inspirational in making the Northeast a region of footballers and athletes. Mary Kom is one such woman who does the Northeast proud and Baichung Bhutia followed in the footsteps of Dr Tali Ao to become a worldclass footballer.

Famed NE Personalities in the genre of glamour
The world of arts, music and glamour has its fair share of people from the Northeast. Moni Kangana Dutta is a well known model who went on to act in Bollywood films. Just like her Patralekha from Shillong modeled and then acted. Reema Debnath of Tripura, Barsha Rani Bishaya of Assam, Maya Chaudhary and Bala Hijam of Manipur and Geetanjali Thapa of Sikkim are some of the leading lights of Northeast in the acting world.
Famed NE Personalities in the genre of music
Talk about musicians and the Northeast has given us some popular rock bands and singers. Khagen Mahanta and his Bihu folk music live in the hearts of Assamese. Pratima Barua from Assam’s royal family of Gauripur popularised Golpriya folk songs. Lou Majaw Te is the Bob Dylan of the Northeast, a legend in his own right famous for his Across the Sea of Sorrow song. If Lou is about rocknroll, Neil Nongkynrih is about classical music, known for his Khasi opera creations and classical piano music. Nise Meruno is another pianist from Nagaland who won the Governor Award for Excellence in music and delivers concerts across South East Asia.
