Newly appointed Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) president formally took charge of his office here the SPCC head-office, 5th Mile.
Basnet had been appointed as the SPCC president on Wednesday by the Congress high command at New Delhi. He replaces Dr. A.D. Subba who yesterday announced resignation from the Congress.
In a brief interaction with reporters at the SPCC head-office, Basnet, 57, thanked the Indian National Congress president Son Gandhi for appointing him as the SPCC president. He spoke about the contribution of Congress for recognition of Nepali language in the Constitution.
Basnet told media that the SPCC will support the Tribal State demand of Sikkim. He also highlighted the issues to be taken up by the SPCC.
Though Sikkim is getting many awards, we are still lagging behind on road conditions, health sector and other areas, said the SPCC president. He called the urban voters to vote in a conscious manner during the upcoming municipal polls in Sikkim.
During the press conference, SPCC general secretary Tara Shrestha refuted the allegations of former SPCC president Dr. Subba made yesterday. He also extended his good wishes to Dr. Subba for his future.
Earlier, Basnet was given a warm welcome at Rangpo by the SPCC workers. Senior SPCC workers and supporters had gathered at Rangpo to welcome Basent who was returning from New Delhi as the new SPCC president.
