Manch wants Gorkha reservation in municipal bodies

Sep 15, 2015 19:21

The Sikkim Gorkha Jagran Manch (SGJM) today advocated for Gorkha wards reservation in the local urban governing bodies of Sikkim.

“We want seat reservation in the name of Gorkhas in the upcoming municipal polls. This is to ensure that the identity of our community is retained. If the newly formed United Forum for Democracy can advocate for BL seats than why also not for Gorkha seats? We have nothing to say on the BL reservation issue but we expect the forum to at least raise their voice on Gorkha seat also,” said SGJM general secretary Balbir Tamang to media.

Tamang said seat reservation must be done on the basis of population.

We have been working to raise awareness in the villages on the political rights of Gorkhas, said the Manch members.
