A district level task force was constituted for East Sikkim for effective implementation of the restriction on sale and entry of non-organic vegetables and fruits as listed by the government on March 31 this year.

As per the order released today, the district level task force for East Sikkim is headed by DC (east) Kapil Meena as its chairman. The force has members including SP (east) Hem Raj Rai and GMC commissioner along with SDMs of Gangtok (headquarter), Rangpo, Pakyong and Rongli. The force also has members from Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Urban Development departments, SIMFED, BDOs, DCSO, and in-charges of Rangpo and Rhenock police check posts.

The district-level task force would be represented at the sub-divisional level under the leadership of the concerned SDMs.

The district and sub-divisional task forces have been mandated to regularly inspect all bazaar areas, check the sale of inorganic vegetables and seize unauthorised vegetables by taking on the spot action against the defaulters. They would also be coordinating with the in-charges of Rangpo and Rhenock police checkposts to check any entry of vehicles carrying inorganic vegetables and to take necessary action.

The two forces would also be checking regular uniform pricing of all the vegetables in the market as per the rate fixed by Horticulture department and SIMFED, and to ensure proper display of rates through municipal and nagar panchayat authorities.

Suitable action would be taken against defaulters as per the procedure mentioned in the notification in collaboration with Motor Vehicle Division for seizure of documents.

A minimum of two surprise inspections in a week will be conducted by the SDMs and BDOs in East Sikkim. The members of the task force are also to carry out awareness activities in all bazaar areas of east district to prevent any misinformation about the government’s initiative. A monthly meeting would be done to review the ban on sale and entry of the listed non-organic vegetables and fruits.
