The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Tripura laid the foundation of a model village in Jirania, home to the threatened tribe Korbong, about 40km east of Agartala on Saturday.
The Korbong community is a sub-tribe of Halam in Tripura and has only 122 people belonging to 31 families. The unique cultural practices of the tribe face a threat.
For years, there had been no special initiative on the part of the autonomous district council (ADC) administration to ensure their protection and development. This prompted ONGC to undertake the project. ONGC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tribal Engineers' Society in March this year to provide financial assistance of Rs 57.71 lakh for developing a community centre, a market shed, education, health care for a year, income generation support, and sanitation, drinking water and irrigation facilities for the villagers of Korbongpara.
Under the project, livelihood opportunities of inhabitants of the village will be developed through fisheries, duck rearing, goat rearing, piggeries and dairies with cross-bred cows under the joint monitoring committee, Gupta said.
After laying the foundation, ONGC handed over Rs 14.42 lakh as the first instalment.
